My Story

Amy Kihlstrom, FNTP.
Amy was born and raised in Livermore, California. She was always outdoors for fun and sports. Her lifestyle was low stress, happy, and extremely healthy foods on the table each day. Today she is married with two adult children in McLean, VA. Amy has always been in the “health” field. Having served as a Firefighter/EMT, she began her career serving her community for 20 years. She also worked as a medical assistant in an Urgent Care and Physicians office. In her spare time, she joined Team in Training and trained for triathlons while raising money to help fight blood cancers. With an interest in always helping/serving others, and an increased desire to learn how to obtain optimal health, she pursued education through the Nutritional Therapy Association (NTA) and is now a certified Functional Nutritional Therapy Practitioner.
Amy’s true passion to understand how to support the body in healing first began with her own health. A severe case of rosacea was so painful she was unable to swim or shower as the water burned her inflamed skin. She had never had acne as a kid. A few visits to the Doctor and a couple of rounds of steroids and specialty creams were her fate. At the same time, Amy experienced extreme bloating and pain in the abdominal region. Having never had issues with her weight, she was concerned. A trip to the Doctor said she might have a gluten and dairy issue. She was already dairy and gluten-free, so she was given medicine for abdominal pain. Amy also struggled with high anxiety and brain fog. More medications to “fix” these symptoms. Amy wanted to know “WHY” these health issues were arising. Why was her skin now so sensitive and inflamed; Why was she told she had to use specialty RX creams and medications and no longer able to use over-the-counter products; Why was her body so inflamed, especially when eating and training like an athlete? Why was she unable to concentrate? The answer she received was “it’s your age; things change; could be hormones…”. This was unacceptable to Amy. She finally started to research how whole foods could help heal the body. She focused on anti-inflammatory foods and noticed a difference in her skin and abdomen.
As she continued to research how real foods do real healing she eventually enrolled in courses with the NTA. The knowledge she gained was paramount to her continued healing. Having always been a “healthy” individual, she supported her body nutritionally and experienced her true optimal health. She learned how to detoxify/cleanse her body thereby absorbing more nutrients from whole foods. Armed with these nutritional nuggets she knew she wanted to help others find their optimal health. She believes in not settling on your health, but rather fight for it. Everyone has the power and the innate wisdom to feel better, you just need to begin the journey. 😊
